Sub-Zero · Owner guide
How to clean a Sub-Zero condenser safely.
A dusty condenser is one of the few cooling problems an owner can fix. Sub-Zero says failing to clean it can lead to temperature loss or mechanical failure.
Safe owner checks only. Turn the unit off before touching the grille or the ice maker, and stop if anything looks damaged.
How often
Sub-Zero recommends cleaning the condenser every 6 to 12 months on built-in and Classic Series units, and every 3 to 6 months on undercounter units.
Steps
- Turn the unit off at the control panel (Unit On/Off or POWER), or turn a dial control down past 1.
- Wear gloves. Condenser fins are sharp.
- Open the grille. On most built-ins the condenser is behind the grille at the top or the kickplate at the bottom. Remove the louvered grille or kickplate as shown in your use and care guide.
- Vacuum the dust and lint with a soft bristle brush attachment, moving in the direction of the fins so you do not bend them. A paint brush, an air compressor on a low setting, or a can of compressed air also work.
- Skip the chemicals. Sub-Zero says condenser cleaners and degreasers are not necessary and not recommended.
- Caged condensers (a screen in front, seen on some 685 and 695 models): Sub-Zero says the screen cannot be removed because it is part of the sealed system. Vacuum it the same way, and use low-pressure air for dust behind it.
- Turn the unit back on and watch the temperatures. They can take up to 24 hours to return to normal.
When to stop and call
If temperatures do not recover within 24 hours, if any error code returns, or if the refrigerator was above 48°F while set at 38°F before cleaning, the unit needs a technician. Call +1 (949) 610-7897 or text us. Regular condenser cleaning can also be part of a scheduled maintenance visit.
