Sub-Zero · Owner guide
Sub-Zero ice maker not making ice? Safe checks first.
Sub-Zero lists a jammed cube, low water pressure, a frozen fill tube, a warm freezer, or a water valve that stayed on too long as common causes. These owner checks come from Sub-Zero's guidance.
Safe owner checks only. Turn the unit off before touching the grille or the ice maker, and stop if anything looks damaged.
Safe checks you can do
- Wait 24 hours after turning on the unit or the ice maker. The freezer has to cool first, then cubes form and drop.
- Make sure the ice maker is on. On many models "ICE" shows on the display when it is on.
- Check the freezer temperature. It should be at or below 5°F. Sub-Zero recommends a 0°F setting. If it is warmer, see Sub-Zero not cooling.
- "Service" and "Ice" flashing? Turn the unit off for 10 seconds and back on. See Sub-Zero display messages.
- Seat the ice bin. It should be level and fully in place. On some models the bin presses the ice maker switch.
- Check the shut-off arm. With the unit off, push the arm down gently if it is up. It only moves about an inch. A broken white plastic arm needs a replacement part.
- Check the water. Make sure the water supply valve to the unit is on. Reseat the unit's water filter and replace it if it is past due. If your home has an inline filter, check that it has not expired. Small or hollow cubes can mean low water pressure.
- Look for jammed cubes in the ice maker and clear them by hand with the unit off. Then turn the unit off and on to reset and allow 24 hours.
- Clean the condenser if it has not been done in 6 to 12 months. See condenser cleaning.
When to stop and call
A frozen fill tube, a valve that keeps shutting the ice maker off, or a freezer that will not reach 0°F needs a technician. Do not chip ice out with tools or apply heat inside the freezer. Call +1 (949) 610-7897 or text us. See also ice maker repair.
