Sub-Zero · Owner guide
Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling? Start with these safe checks.
A few owner checks from Sub-Zero's own guidance fix some warm-unit cases and save time on the visit. Do them in order, then allow up to 24 hours for temperatures to recover.
Safe owner checks only. Turn the unit off before touching the grille or the ice maker, and stop if anything looks damaged.
Safe checks you can do
- Check the setpoint. On an electronic control, Sub-Zero recommends 38°F for the refrigerator. On 200, 300 and 500 Series dial controls, set the dial between 4 and 6 (1 is warmest, 10 is coldest). Allow 24 hours after any change.
- Check the door. Make sure nothing in the unit is blocking the door and that it was not left open. Look at the door gasket (the rubber seal) for tears or gaps.
- Think about what went in. A load of new groceries or warm food raises the temperature for a few hours. It should return to normal on its own.
- Clean the condenser if it has not been cleaned in the last 6 months. See how to clean a Sub-Zero condenser.
- Check the display mode. If the display reads normal temperatures (for example 38 and 0) but nothing is cold, the unit may be in showroom mode, where it does not cool. Classic Series shows "Sh r". If the display or controls do not respond, it may be in Sabbath mode ("SAb" on Classic Series), and touching POWER returns it to normal. See Sub-Zero display messages.
- After a power outage: Sub-Zero notes that a Classic Series unit that was in Sabbath mode goes back into Sabbath mode when power returns.
- Double dashes (--) on the display mean that section has been turned off. See how to turn it back on.
- Note which sections are warm and the temperatures shown. This helps the technician.
When to stop and call
Sub-Zero notes that if the refrigerator reads above 48°F while set at 38°F, a condenser cleaning is unlikely to bring it back. If it is still warm 24 hours after these checks, or "Service" keeps flashing, the unit needs a technician. Move food to a cooler, keep the doors closed, and call +1 (949) 610-7897 or text us.
Do not remove panels other than the grille, and do not touch wiring, the compressor, or refrigerant lines. Sealed-system work is done by an EPA Section 608 certified technician.
